Learn to Quilt – Beginner Quilting Series
Before we get started we need to sort out a few different terms. A quilt is fabric that is pieced together and then layered with batting.
Quilting is the process of creating a quilt BUT it is also the action of adding the stitching on top of the quilt to finish the piece.
There are many different kinds of quilts and the process for creating each is unique. There are also many types of quilting. This post will walk you through how to get started

Is quilting an expensive hobby?
Quilting can be an expensive hobby. There are a lot of costs related to quilting.
If you are just starting out then you should just start with the basics. A self healing cutting mat, a clear ruler, a rotary cutter, a sewing machine, pins, and thread. This will mitigate the cost of the hobby. However these things bought all at once come at a considerable cost.
Quilting is a hobby that you will have to sink several hundred dollars into before you can even begin. Unless of course you are gifted a machine or find the supplies at a considerable discount. This is not impossible but be cautious of discount supplies that are not good quality. Supplies that are low quality will only serve to cause frustration and could make it so that you don’t want to quilt. In which case the money you spent on these discount supplies would be wasted.
Once you have purchased the supplies to quilt the next most expensive part of quilting is the fabric. There are ways to save money on fabric, see THIS post. I highly recommend getting the highest quality fabric you can afford.

What is the easiest quilt pattern for a beginner?
There are tons of great beginner quilting patterns.
The best pattern to start with is a pattern that inspires you that is also on your skill level. If you are just starting out I recommend starting with lots of straight lines, don’t try curved piecing as a beginner.
Something like THIS subway tile quilt or THIS easy square quilt. Another place I like to find quilt patterns is Fave Quilts.
I also recommend you start with a smaller quilt. Nothing larger than a lap quilt. The larger quilts are harder to maneuver and they are a lot more work. Especially if you are planning on quilting (adding the top stitching) the quilt on your small home machine.
Is it hard to learn to quilt?
Quilting may seem like a hard thing to learn. There is a learning curve but as with all things in life, practice makes easier and better.
Repetition is your friend when learning to quilt. Video tutorials are also a great way to help with the learning process. You can find me on YouTube or simply search beginner quilting.
