What supplies do I need for hand embroidery?

Hand embroidery is a great hobby because you need very few supplies.

Embroidery Floss

An Embroidery Hoop

Embroidery Needles

Needle Minder (optional but helpful)

Embroidery Pattern – see below. Or check out even more patterns HERE.

Tips for Hand Embroidery

  • Pass your thread over beeswax to keep it from tangling when you are embroidering.
  • Use three strands of embroidery floss for a thinner stitch. Use the full 6 strands of floss when you are wanting a thicker look or to fill in a larger area.
  • Try using pinking shears on the edge of your fabric to keep it from fraying while you are working on your project.
  • Watercolor pencils or crayons can be used as fill. Try them in areas where you don’t want to use a ton of stitches but still want to add color.

For an in depth tutorial for beginners check out THIS post for a basic walkthrough and THIS post for a video walkthrough.

Easy Rainbow Patterns

You are Loved Rainbow Pattern

This fun pattern is from my friend at The Kitschy Stitcher. You can find all her amazing work on Instagram and go grab this pattern to share with someone you love!

Fringe Rainbow

This fringed rainbow gives me a big smile! I love the satin stitch and the hanging floss fringe at the bottom. This is on the top of my must make list.

Do Good Be Good

This non-traditional rainbow is so on trend right now. I find french knot embroidery so peaceful, you can see a video for the technique HERE. You can also find this same pattern from and other adventures in Pink and Green.

Earth Rainbow

You can have a rainbow without all the color. This neutral rainbow is perfect for your Scandinavian decor that doesn’t include a lot of color.

Rainbow Mandala

I am so tickled by this pretty pattern. The juxtaposition of the rainbow with the mandala is simply beautiful.

This pattern is simple but stunning. This would be a great one to practice your lines or to help the kiddos learn to embroider.
