10+ Tools and Supplies for Hand Embroidery

I recently took a beginning embroidery class. It was only an hour long but I am totally hooked! I don’t do a lot of hand sewing but I love the look embroidery gives a project! If you are new to embroidery like I was then you should check out these tools for hand embroidery.

What are the basic tools and materials used in embroidery?

There are several must have tools that you need for hand embroidery. You need embroidery needles, a hoop, something to transfer your design, and embroidery floss. There are also a bunch of other tools that you don’t necessarily need but that will make embroidery easier and more comfortable. I have put together a huge list of both types of supplies to get you started.

Embroidery Hoops:

I love this set because it has so many size options. You will always have the size you need on hand and you won’t constantly be running to the craft store to find the right size.

Pearl Cotton Threads:

This is a great collection of thread! I like this pearl thread for embroidery because it doesn’t separate like standard embroidery thread. It has a nice smooth look on your finished product.

OttLite:

This little light is great if you are wanting to do your embroidery while sitting in bed or on the couch watching TV. It has a nice bright white light that saves my eyes from straining to see the small details of my pattern and stitching.

Transfer Pen:

This pen is perfect for transferring patterns onto your fabric. Dab with water when finished to remove any remaining marks. This is nice because some transfer options fade after some time has passed. This won’t fade until you use water which means you can set the project down and come back later without worrying that your image will be gone.

Embroidery Scissors:

You need a small pair of scissors because a regular pair of scissors is cumbersome when you are sitting on the couch and trying to work on your project.

Embroidery Needles:

There are several different sizes of embroidery needle. If you are using a pattern you it might call for a specific size. If not you will definitely find a size that you are most comfortable with. I recommend getting a sampler pack like the one below to see what you are most comfortable with using when you do your hand embroidery.

Needle Threader:

With the thick thread it can be difficult to thread the needle. This little threader is perfect for saving yourself some time and trouble! Help yourself out!

Thread Organizer:

Keep all your thread colors organized with this handy thread holder. The bobbins are great for keeping your thread from tangling and getting mixed up.

Tracing Paper:

This is another great option for transferring a design. Just trace the image onto this paper over the fabric and your design will transfer to the fabric.

Lap Stand:

If you have done some embroidery you know that it can be hard on your wrist or neck. This stand is great for holding your project and saving your hands and wrists some pain. I use this for my embroidery and my cross stitch and it saves me from some serious hand cramping!

The Stitch Bible:

Every stitch you could ever imagine is in this handy dandy stitch bible. This is great for newbies but it is also a great refresher to keep on your shelf to refer back to from time to time.

    Hello,
I’m having trouble in finding 22 count Hardanger fabric in colors other than white and ecru.
Also Perle threads in color varieties.
