Scrappy Easy Rainbow Quilt Pattern Tutorial

If you know me then you know that I am obsessed with all things rainbow! This month I have teamed up with JOANN to bring you this beautiful rainbow quilt pattern. This quilt is great for using up scraps, but if you don’t have scraps you can also make each strip with a small cut of fabric. This is a great size for a rainbow baby quilt pattern, the finished size is 30″ x 40″. Here is a scrappy easy rainbow quilt pattern.

This post is sponsored by JOANN. I was compensated for this post but all ideas and opinions are my own.ย

Supplies:

Rainbow colored fabric, I let my kiddos pick the fabrics for this fun quilt and they had a blast.

Contrasting color fabric, I chose the white fabric with the red triangles to contrast the rainbow strips.

Backing Fabric – one yard or a piece measuring at least 32″ x 42″

Batting – I like this fusible fleece from Thermoweb you can buy 1 yard or 2 packages of the prepackaged fleece

White Fabric for Binding

Coordinating Thread – I like this Gutermann Sew All

Instructions:

If you are new to quilting you might want to start HERE.

First print the pattern PDF listed above. The images are not to scale but they do give you the exact measurements to cut each piece.

I suggest that you cut all the white pieces that you will need first. I used my mini wonderclips to organize the pieces. They were color coded which worked out perfectly! By clipping the pieces together based on the color of strip that they will go you will stay nice and organized.

**TIP Use a plastic sandwich bag to sort out your different colors and keep your pieces separate and organized.

You can make this rainbow stripe quilt in several different ways. You can make it scrappy or make it with sold stripes. We will start with the instructions for the scrappy method and then we’ll talk about the solid piece method.

To make this a scrappy quilt you will piece together squares, triangles, strips, or any other pieces you have to make a long strip. Then trim the strip to the finished size listed in the PDF.

Check out THESE quilting tips if you are struggling!

**TIP – Press and Square after each and every piece that you add. This will help to keep everything straight and give you a nice finished piece.

Alternately you could cut one piece of yellow that is the finished size listed on the pattern. So for yellow you would cut a 6 1/2″ x 28 1/2″ strip.

Then take your white square that is the same height as the strip. Place it pattern side down on the right edge of the strip. Trace a straight line from corner to corner. Sew along the line you just drew. (This is not like most HST methods. You are sewing directly over the line rather than 1/4″ away from the line.)

Trim the excess 1/4″ away from the seam you just sewed. Last add the remaining white strip to make your entire stripe measure 30″.

Repeat these steps until you have completed all the colored stripes. Attach the stripes in rainbow order. ROYGBV ๐Ÿ˜‰ Press the top firmly to remove all wrinkles and make sure that all the seams are flat.

Finishing the Rainbow Quilt

Press your fusible fleece to the backing of the quilt. Then use a spray adhesive (like THIS ONE) to adhere the front of the quilt to your batting.

Finish by quilting in whatever method you desire. I chose to do straight lines. For straight line quilting use your walking foot. For free motion quilting use your quilting foot and lower the feed dogs.

Use a 2″ white strip to create the binding ย and finish the quilt. See THIS post for all the quilt binding tips and tricks in my arsenal!

Do you mention how many of each of the pieces we need in the pdf or is it just one of each? By “white” fabric, do you mean the white background fabric with the red triangles?

The quilt is made up of one strip of each color. So you will need one of each of the dimensions mentioned. And yes I used a white fabric with red triangles as the white fabric mentioned in the directions. <3

Hello! Thanks so much for responding!! This would be my first attempt at something larger than a table runner but I’m excited to try it.

Hi there. I am not sure which pink quilt you are referring to. If you could tell me where you saw the picture of a pink quilt I might be able to help you. It is not my practice to trick anyone into coming to the post. This is a scrappy rainbow quilt and I have always promoted it as such. If it was a pink quilt it would probably not be called a rainbow quilt ๐Ÿ˜‰ !! But please let me know where you found the picture of a pink quilt and I can help guide you to that quilt! Thanks.

In the posters defence,I also clicked on a pretty pink quilt and was directed to this pattern. This one is also adorable but not the one I was looking at. It is one by Patternpile .com

That is strange. Sometimes people change the links on their pins and sometimes it glitches.
