Glow in the Dark Fabric Paint Tutorial
If your kids are anything like mine then they have an obsession with all things glow in the dark. Since summer is the season for camping and looking at the stars I decided it was the perfect time to make a glow in the dark shirt for camping or just star gazing in general! Here is a glow in the dark fabric paint tutorial.
Glow in the Dark Fabric Paint Tutorial
Deco Art provided the paint for this post but all opinions and ideas are my own.
Supplies:
DecoArt So Soft Fabric Paint (Green Apple & Indian Turquoise)
Freezer Paper for Stencil
Cutting Machine (Silhouette or Cricut)
Give Me Space Cut File (JPEG or SVG)
Plain T-Shirt
Instructions:
Use your cutting machine to create a stencil on freezer paper. (For tips on using a cut file with your cutting machine see THIS post.) Mark the middle of the stencil and the middle of the shirt to ensure that they are lined up. Iron the freezer paper (shiny side down) onto the shirt. In a bowl mix equal amounts of the colored fabric paint with the gl0-it medium. Place a piece of cardboard inside the shirt to keep the paint from running through to the back. Use your sponge brush to paint the words.
If you use a dark shirt you will have to wait for the paint to dry and do several layers. Once you have added the layers and let the words completely dry we can move on to the next step. Now we will attach the planet stencil. Be careful not to touch the iron directly to the painted area when you attach the new stencil.
Using just the glo-it go over the planet. Again use 2-3 coats of paint. Set the paint as instructed on the containers. Don’t skip this step!!
This is the shirt under a black light. It glows really well without a black light but it is next to impossible to photograph that way!
There are lots of ways you can customize the shirt including using the planet stencil as a big planet rather than just an outline. Add fun details to the words or even add glow in the dark stars around the shirt.
The paint dries very soft (as the description states!) It also washes super nice and stays in place even when going through the washer and dryer! My son loves his shirts and they glow super bright after being outside for the day! These are the perfect star-gazing shirts!
Would your little one love a glow in the dark shirt? What would their dream shirt say? Share with me in the comments below.
