Easy Apron Patterns for the Whole Family
When I first started sewing I made so many aprons! I grabbed every apron pattern I could find and started whipping through them. I still have a cupboard full of aprons that I made as gifts and never had the courage to give to anyone! I love an easy apron pattern because it is quick to make, doesn’t take much fabric, and is totally adorable! I have gathered a TON of awesome apron patterns so you can create a whole closet full as well! Plus I will show you a fun way to customize a store bought apron to make it a special part of a gift basket or house warming gift. Here are some easy apron patterns for the whole family.
Easy Apron Patterns for the Whole Family
Making your own apron is fantastic and I have put together a list of LOTS of great aprons to make, scroll down to see all the different apron patterns. But before we get there I want to show you a quick and easy way to customize a store bought apron. I have paired up with 6 fantastic designers to create this adorable sweet shoppe bundle. These would all make an adorable addition to any apron you might make or buy.
To create these aprons you will need to grab the bundle. Then make your apron from one of the patterns below OR buy a pack of pre-made aprons HERE.
Then cut the file you have chosen from the bundle using heat transfer vinyl. I get my HTV from Expressions Vinyl, HERE. Then use your heat source, I used my EasyPress2 (more about it HERE), to add the vinyl to the front of the apron.
Cori from Hey Let’s Make Stuff also created a customized apron with this adorable bundle, check it out HERE.
How do you sew pockets on an apron?
There are two types of pockets that you can add to an apron. You can create a patch pocket, which is a separate square (or other shape) of fabric that you will place on top of the apron. You create this type of pocket by cutting your shape and then pressing the edges under 1/4″. The top edge you will top-stitch. Then place your patch pocket onto your apron and stitch around the three remaining sides to attach the pocket. You could add a hoodie type pocket in this same manner. But instead of top-stitching the top you would top-stitch the two rounded sides and then attach the top and bottom to the apron.
The second type of pocket is a side pocket that is hidden in the side seam. For this type of pocket you need to have a back lining on the apron to hide the pocket. You can learn this method for adding a pocket to your apron in THIS post.
How much fabric is needed for an apron?
Every apron pattern will require a different amount of fabric. An apron that is half length, so from waist to just above the knee, will require much less fabric. An apron that is full length, that ties around your neck and waist will take more fabric. Another factor to take into account is if the apron is reversible and has a coordinating fabric on the back. These will obviously take double the amount of fabric.
Lastly you will need more fabric for ruffles, binding, and pockets. Be sure to read the pattern to determine exactly how much fabric is required for the particular apron you are planning to make.
