Creative Fabric Storage Ideas

Fabric storage is a huge issue for someone like me who is more than slightly obsessed with fabric! I have so much of it! But it’s not like I have a clean and tidy yard of everything! I have precuts and scraps and fat quarters and everything in between! Here are some great fabric storage ideas to help you get your fabric addiction organized!

How to Organize Fabric in Sewing Room

There are so many ways to go about organizing your fabric. I have put together a huge list of items that might work for you and your sewing room, below.

As someone who is mildly obsessed with rainbows I have all my fabric organized by color.

Then I have a separate cubby hole where I keep my precuts. I like to keep the precuts together because they are coordinating patterns.

Last I keep my larger scraps folded and again organized by color in a small box. My smaller scraps are kept in jars (as mentioned below) where I can see what scraps I have and they are NOT at all organized!

How to Fold Fabric for Storage

I found that the best way to fold my fabric was to keep the fabric folded in half (as it comes off the bolt.) Then fold the top folded edge down and the bottom edge up, in thirds. This gives you a nice size to fit onto the boards.

Make sure you check out the video below for a quick video on how I folded my fabric to fit on the comic book boards.

Or keep your fabric folded in half (as it comes off the bolt.) Then fold it in half again. This gives you a good size to roll your fabric. Rolled fabric is a good option if you plan to use the cubby below! You can get a good idea of what your fabric looks like and it stacks easily and beautifully when rolled.

Storage Cube

This storage cube is great for many reasons! It rolls so you can turn the cube to find whatever you are looking for. I also love it because it not only stores fabric but you can store your thread and other notions as well!

File Cabinet

Sew Many Ways shows us how she uses a file cabinet to “file” her fabric. Use this adorable filing cabinet for fabric filing. Then put your apothecary jars on top and the charm pack boxes on the shelves!

Storage Ottoman Cube

You can sit on these, stack them or store them under a table or desk. These are great not only for folded fabric but also for other sewing notions.

Rolling Organization Cart

This would be perfect for a mobile sewing station. If you don’t have a dedicated sewing room store your machine on top and then store your fabric and notions underneath! Then just roll it out of the closet when you need it!

Fabric Storage Boxes and Bins

Woven Plastic Bin

I have lots of these bins in my craft room (not pictured because they are in my ugly closet!) They are great for storing fabric because you can see through them to what you have stored inside. These are where I store my precut charm packs!

Deep Box with Removable Dividers

I love this box for storing pre-cuts. Charm packs are especially difficult for me to find a place where I can store them but still see what I have!

Fabric Strip Case

This case is great for jelly rolls or cut strips of fabric. It will keep them from getting creased and wrinkled. Not sure what a jelly roll is? Check out THIS post about precuts!

Apothecary Jars

I have a whole group of these where I store all my scraps! I also store my scissors and zippers in these jars (as you can see below.) It is pretty and it reminds me of an old school candy shop! I can see all my different scraps and I love looking at all my pretty fabric!

Fabric Storage Gadgets

Comic Book Boards

You can see these boards in action in the picture below. They work great on lots of different size pieces of fabric. You can use them again and again. I recommend grabbing an extra set of short pins to keep the fabric on the comic book board.

Curtain Rod

Hang a piece of folded fabric from each clip for a pretty display that saves closet and drawer space! Utilize wall space for your fabric storage.

Swing Arm Slack Holder

Fold your fabric and lay it over these swing arm hangers for a more consolidated fabric hanging option.

Over Door Shoe Storage

Here is another fun scrap option. You can organize the scraps by color or pattern and hide them behind the door!

Magazine File

You know all those short-ies that you got up there and wrapped your fabric on? Organize them in here by color or pattern and display them on a shelf or table. Or use some of that excess fabric to wrap these boxes and then store fabric in them!

Good morning! Thanks for the tips. I also use a filing cabinet. First I fold fabric around comic book boards (amazon), pin it to secure, then file by color, project, or fabric type.
