Superhero Art Smock
Superhero Art Smock
I recently went to the costume store to find Halloween costumes and as I was looking over all the expensive yet poorly made costumes at the store I realized that even if I bought one of these crappy costumes and put it on my wheelie guy you wouldn’t be able to see it. And thus was born the idea to create a smock to put over the harness so that people could actually see his costume!
This is just one of my 50+ easiest sewing tutorials. Check out the rest HERE.
And I know that most of you have no need for a costume that fits over a wheelchair. So as I was sewing I realized that this would also be perfect as a superhero art smock. So I made a costume for my little guy and now I think I will make some smocks for my youngest son’s preschool class!
I adapted this Raglan Tee Tutorial to create the smock. Follow her directions to make the sleeves and the front of the shirt.
Then for the back I just made half of the back.
Then follow the directions for the tee again to attach the sleeves to the front and back piece.
It should look like this. (This is where I stopped looking at that other tutorial. So I am not sure how she finishes the shirt. You should definitely check that out though because her finished shirt looks adorable!)Next cut the back piece straight down the middle to create two halves.
The last step, which I am assuming is similar to the original tutorial, is to finish all the raw edges. I used the same black from the sleeves and created binding (because I am a quilter at heart and I have NO IDEA how to actually make clothes!!!) Then add velcro or ties to keep the back closed and keep the smock from falling off.
Also I made these with superhero appliques but it would be just as easy to make with princess logos and in girl colors.
I used the Green Lantern stencil from this site and they have a lot of great superhero stencils. I cut the stencil out in felt and appliqued it to the smock.
That is it! A really fun art smock that is pretty quick and easy to sew! Try making it with waterproof fabric to make the smock really easy to wipe down! This would also work as a full bib for a messy toddler!!
