Star Wars Rebel Pilot Pillow Tutorial

When Maria from Moving with the Military reached out to me about creating a rebel pilot pillow for a sweet military kiddo I was totally on board! Then I realized I had to share this fun project with all of you because you would need to make one of these for the Star Wars lover in your life! When she put this pillow in the room the cosplay characters were trying to steal it, so I know this is a good one! Want more Star Wars, check out THIS post for tons of craft ideas!

What do I need to make this pillow?

1 yard Orange Duck Canvas

Felt: You need 1 yard of white. For the rest of the colors 1/4 yard is plenty.

White

Gray

Black

Blue

18″ pillow form (or make your own with THIS tutorial.)

From the orange canvas cut:

1 – 18 1/4″ square

2 – 18 1/4″ x 12 1/2″ rectangles

Download this PATTERN and trace and cut the pieces from your felt.

Then from white felt cut:

1  – 13″ square

1 – 18″ x 36″ piece.

How to make the pillow

Fold your 18″ x 36″ strip of felt in accordion fashion, the 18″ side remains 18″, the 36″ side will be getting shorter and shorter. Clip or pin each fold. Then sew along the edges.

Now grab the felt cut with pattern piece A from the PDF pattern. Line it up on the back of your accordion folded felt. Trim the accordion piece to match piece A. Sew the two pieces together with the accordion on the front. Sew this piece to your 18″ square orange canvas.

Use the image below to line up the remaining felt pieces on top of your accordion fabric. Sew them in place. You can use a temporary. spray adhesive, like THIS, to hold the pieces in place before sewing.

You may need to use your walking foot. The felt is fairly easy to work with but as your piece gets thicker the foot will help to feed the fabric evenly.

I also added some stitching details into the blank white space. You can get as detailed as you want with this process, take this time to really make the pillow your own! I wanted to make it fairly simple so people could easily achieve the look but, you could add even more felt details if you are feeling ambitious.

To finish the pillow check out THIS tutorial for how to make a square pillow cover (this one has an envelope closure.) Use the directions in that tutorial with the measurements of canvas I gave you above.

This pillow helped to inspire an entire Star Wars themed room. If you are into home decor or just love good deeds I highly recommend you check out how this room turned out and the final home of this fun pillow! Thanks to Moving with the Military for allowing me to be part of this amazing project!
