Sewing School – Interactive Class

I am so excited to start the new year with a fun new series! Today I am launching Sewing School over on Facebook. Please go and join the group and follow along as we teach you everything you need to know to learn how to sew this year. This class is for those of you who are BRAND NEW to sewing! You are welcome to join and follow along even if you already know how to sew but I plan to share tips as if you are just pulling the sewing machine out of the box with no idea what to do!

January’s lesson is sewing a straight line! This month we will make three different quilt squares. Not a quilt, just the squares. I will show you three different squares you can make simply by sewing a straight line. Then we will frame them and hang them somewhere as artwork. This is a great first project because all you need to learn is how to sew a straight line. I will be on the Facebook page daily to answer questions and guide you through the process. This is a very interactive class and I want you to ask questions and post your projects and progress to share with others! So make sure and go join the group so you can be part of the class!

Here is a list of the things you will need for January’s project. The links will take you to the things that I have used and enjoy using if you need help figuring out what to get and where. Collect these things now so you will be ready to get started on January 1st.

You need a sewing machine, if you have one great. This is the one I have and it is a great starter machine. I do all the sewing you see on this blog with this machine and it has no problems. It is cheap and easy to work with.

You will need a selection of fabric, I like Craftsy for fabric because they often have great sales and clearance. A good way to get started is to search the site by color and then pick a few that you think go well together. I went with black and white for this project. I ended up getting a fat quarter bundle in lots of different black and white patterns. I have designed these quilt squares the use 4 different fabric patterns. A1/2 yard in each pattern should be more than enough for this project, you will have some leftovers but you will be able to incorporate these scraps into some of projects for the next few months. I am using Cotton + Steel Black and White collection for this project.

If you don’t have one you will need a rotary cutter and a mat. <<That also includes the clear ruler you will need.

For the triangle quilt block you will need this triangle quilt ruler.

The last thing you will need for this project is thread. This Gutermann thread is the only thing I use when I sew. I find it reliable and it gets along well with my machine!

You will need three 12×12 picture frames, like these, if you want to frame your blocks when you are done.

We will start the class and the project on January 1st so be sure to check in here and on Facebook for your first assignment! And if you have any questions when gathering supplies please feel free to email me at [email protected] or shoot me a message on Facebook! Thanks so much for joining in I can’t wait to see the great things we can do together!!
