Sewing Classes

Taking a class is one of the best ways to learn a new skill. Sewing classes are no exception! There are so many great classes out there so I have put together a few of the classes that I think are the most helpful no matter what your skin level is. If you want to learn to sew or just expand your sewing knowledge there is almost certainly a class out there to help you increase your knowledge. This list is continually growing as I find new and wonderful sewing classes, be sure to pin it and check back often!

If you are looking to learn to use your serger then you MUST take this course from Emily at Life Sew Savory. She is the queen of the serger!

How do I start learning to sew?

If you want to learn to sew you have come to the right place! Realizing that there is SEW much you don’t know is the first step. There are several avenues you can take to learn to sew. One of the best options is to take a class. Classes are generally taught and created by people with a LOT of experience.

You can try and watch Youtube videos but it could be a lengthy and frustrating process. If you aren’t familiar with the terminology you might not even know what to search for. Then when you do find what you are looking for you might have to watch more videos to learn all the techniques and terms in the original video!

If you are brand new to sewing, as in haven’t even taken the machine out of the box and don’t know any of the terms or lingo, I have a course that is meant just for you!

Sewing 101 will walk you through everything you need to know to get your machine out of the box and ready to sew.

What is the best sewing machine for a beginner?

This is a topic that I have discussed at length in THIS post.

My favorite machine for beginners is the Brother CS6000i. It is lightweight which makes it great for taking to sewing classes. It has a speed regulator, which means you can set a max speed so you aren’t constantly worrying about going too fast. The machine beeps and won’t sew if you forget to put the presser foot down which I promise will save you TONS of headaches. Plus the manual is thorough and it comes with every foot you could need for most every basic sewing project.

Joann Fabrics Sewing Classes:

Joann is a great place to start for beginners. They have well priced fabric and supplies and you can take a class in store to learn what the heck you are doing with those supplies!

Sewing Classes at Joann Fabric and Craft Stores – An in person class is a great option. Your experience will vary a lot depending on the instructor. You can do a google search to find sewing classes in your area. Just search sewing classes near me to see if there additional options besides JOANN.

If you have a local quilt shop you can inquire there as well to see if they offer classes. Many local shops do have classes but they often require you to buy fabric or notions in the store. This means that you are paying more for fabric than you would at the larger craft stores which is not always ideal for beginners. A local quilt shop is a better option if you are taking a very specific technique class rather than a beginner class.

If you have a local quilt shop this is also a great place to start looking for a class. Depending on how active your local quilt shop is you might find a great class. If they don’t offer a class for beginners, ask! If you ask they might be able to set up a class depending on how much interest they have had!

How do you get good at sewing?

If you are already familiar with your machine and sewing a straight line you might be ready to expand your knowledge by taking a more specialized class. If you are dedicated to learning to up your sewing game I highly recommend checking out BluPrint from Craftsy. BluPrint allows you to take an unlimited number of classes from industry experts. This is great if you want to sew but are also interested in other pastimes like making cakes and dancing. Bluprint seriously has so much great content.

Another place to find lots of great sewing classes is Skillshare. This is a great platform that has SO many different genres of sewing. If you are looking for basic sewing, paper piecing, or even cosplay tips and tricks this site has it all! This platform has some serious hidden gems and you never know what you will find.
