How to Embroider on Coloring Sheets

This technique is something I have been playing around with for a minute now. I am not even sure what to call it. It involves using my regular sewing machine, my quilting foot and plate, and some thread to color/embroider on a coloring sheet that is printed on a quilt sheet. It sounds confusing but stick with me because the finished product is simply fantastic! Here is how to embroider on coloring sheets.

Supplies:

Thermoweb EZ Print Quilt Sheets

Coloring Sheet (I used this camera page from Dawn Nicole Designs.)

Aurifil Thread (Sweet Pea by Sweet Caroline is pictured in this tutorial.)

Fabric

Instructions:

Print the camera page twice, first onto a regular piece of paper and second onto the EZ Print Quilt Sheet. Then cut the camera out of the paper and trace it onto your fabric.

Then cut the center out of the camera and trace it onto the coordinating fabric.

Now line up your muslin or white cotton with the EZ Print sheet. The camera should line up right over the camera on the sheet. Pin it in place and then pin the camera lens in place.

Once everything is pinned in place you can flip the piece over so you can see the lines on the quilt sheet. Stitch around the lines to stitch the camera and all the small pieces in place. If you have lined it up correctly the lines will match up with the edges of the camera and small pieces.

Now grab your different color aurifil threads and wind yourself a bunch of bobbins! Attach your quilting foot and plate to cover the feed dogs. Use the different colors to go over the lines on the coloring sheet. You can fill in the places that you feel need some extra color.

This is the back side of the quilt sheet. I kind of love this side as much as the front side. A few tips that I found. The darker thread shows the flaws a little more but it shows up a lot better than the lighter thread. The yellow was really hard to see so even though the darker shows the flaws I preferred it to the lighter. This is not for the faint of heart, there will be mistakes and flaws. I am totally able to live with that, if you are a perfectionist good luck! 😉

I am totally in love with how this project turned out! Now I can turn coloring pages into adorable projects. What should I make with this little block? Maybe a tote? Share your ideas with me in the comments below.

Don’t forget to try some bobbin work! I just did an initial on a pillow cover. Don’t forget to do a reverse print and a test. I am looking forward to doing bobbin work again. I’m retired and trying to stay away from the kitchen and pantry!
Thanks for sharing with us, save some time for hugs and good books!
