Fur Christmas Tree Skirt Sewing Tutorial

When you look and look for a tree skirt and can’t find one that you love it is time to take matters into your own hands. I have been dreaming of a faux fur tree skirt and so I paired up with JOANN to create this beautiful handmade fur Christmas tree skirt. This pairs great with these fur trimmed stockings.

Supplies:

1 1/3 yard Sherpa

1 1/3 yard Faux Fur (Blond Wolf or Cream Grizzly)

Blond Wolf or Cream Grizzly

Pins

Walking Foot

Instructions:

To find the correct size you will measure beneath your tree using a piece of string or twine. Measure from the trunk of the tree to where you want the outside edge of the skirt to land. Cut the twine, leaving a tail on both sides. Tie a marker on one end and a push pin or sewing pin on the other end. Use a ruler to find the middle of your piece of fur. Place the push pin in the exact middle of the fur and mark a circle by pulling the string taut and marking with the marker end.

Use a heavy duty pair of scissors to cut around the circle. You might want to do this in the garage because the fur will shed (a lot!) Next place your fur circle onto the sherpa and cut around the circle.

Now we will create an inside circle where the skirt will meet the trunk of the tree. Shorten your string to create a much smaller inner circle. Use a straight edge to draw a line from the outside edge to the inner circle.

Pin around the entire outer circle. Use a lot of pins because you are going to be sewing through thick layers and you don’t want anything to move.

Sew around the entire outer edge. Use a pair of scissors to cut along the straight line you drew earlier. Pin around the inner circle and along the two straight sides. Start sewing about 3″ down from the inner circle on one side and sew around the inner circle and down 3″ along the other straight side. I also added 3″ of stitching to the bottom edge of each straight side as well to make it easier to finish later (as you can see in the picture below.)

Finishing the Skirt:

From the muslin cut four pieces that measure 8″ x 12″ (this will create really large ties so cut these pieces smaller if you don’t want really noticeable ties.) Fold the pieces in half so they measure 4″ x 12″ and sew around the top edge and the raw long edge. Leave the bottom open to turn the tie out. Press the seams in place after turning out.

Tuck two ties into one side of the straight edge of the skirt. The raw edge should stick out and the finished edges will be inside the skirt. Sew along this edge to secure the ties. Turn the entire piece out through the open straight edge.

Now place the two remaining ties (raw edges first) into the opening and pin the opening closed.  Sew along this edge to finish the tree skirt.

Tips:

*Use a walking foot when sewing the fur and sherpa together. The sherpa will slip a bit so the walking foot helps to keep things in place.

* The fur will be stuck in the seam around all the edges. Simply use your fingers to pull the fur out of the seam. This will also hide the top-stitching and the seam around the outer edge.

* Make smaller ties if you don’t want them to be a prominent part of the finished skirt. You can make them smaller and tuck them under the skirt if you don’t want them to be visible.

* Have a vacuum handy because the fur and sherpa both shed a considerable amount. Make sure and clean your machine after sewing as well because it will add lots of fuzz to the machine.

Outtakes:

He insisted on being the model for this photo shoot. He is loving this fur Christmas tree skirt. But even willing models have their limits!
