Faux Fur Stockings Instructions:

Print the template (linked above) and tape it together. Fold your knit sweater fabric in half right sides together and cut around the stocking pattern. Pin the two sides together, use a lot of pins because the fabric doesn’t hold it’s shape and likes to move around.

Fold the front top edge under 1/4″. Cut a piece of the fur trim that is the same width as the top edge of the stocking. Clip the fur trim to the front edge of the top of the stocking (that has been folded over. Top-stitch the fur trim in place (this will set the folded front edge as well.) Fold the top  back edge under 1/4″. Sew this seam in place. Leave the rest of the stocking pinned together during this process.

Sew around the remaining edges of the stocking. Note that the fur trim will not be sewn down along the bottom edge but it will be attached along the top and both sides. You can top-stitch the bottom edge if you prefer it to be sewn all the way down.

Fold a piece of muslin in half and use the stocking template to cut out two stocking sides out of the muslin. Then sew around the sides and bottom of the muslin stocking pieces using 1/4″ seam allowance.

Stuff the muslin stocking into the sweater stocking. The muslin stocking won’t be turned out whereas the sweater stocking should be turned out so that fur is on the outside.  **Stick your hand into the muslin piece and push around the edges to ensure that everything lines up nicely.

Fold the edges of the muslin towards the sweater knit and pin around the top edges. Clip this in place and set aside.

Finishing Instructions:

Cut four strips of muslin that measure 2″ x 6-10″ (depending on the length you want your ties to be.) Place two of the pieces together and sew around three edges, leaving a short edge open to turn out. Repeat with the second set. Turn the ties out and press. Pin the ties to the back edge of the stocking (the side without the fur) in between the muslin and sweater knit.

Sew around the top edge to close the stocking. This will attach the muslin piece to the sweater piece and finish the stocking. Back-stitch over the portion with the ties to add some stability, this might cause the faux fur to flatten. So the faux fur might need to be fluffed. Simply pull at the edges with your fingers or a comb to release the long hair strands from the seam. Fluffing the fur will also ensure that the stitching doesn’t show.

If you want stockings without a faux fur trim then simply skip the step with the fur.

How much material is needed to make two stockings? If I was “guesstimating” I would say half yard of sweater material and half yard of muslim? Is this about right?

The foot of the stocking is 10.5″ wide, so you need 21″ x WOF. I would get 2/3 of a yard of each to be safe.
