Easy Uniform Hearts – Sewing Tutorial
Lately, I have been working on a special passion project lately. I have been sewing these easy uniform hearts to send to military kids around the world! Both my boys are military kids, so this project is near and dear to my heart! These hearts can be made using any material (that you can sew) and they come together quickly and easily. These hearts would also make great memory pieces, for someone who may have passed or spends a lot of time away.
Easy Uniform Hearts – Sewing Tutorial
What are Uniform Hearts?
Uniform hearts are hearts made from various uniforms. This includes military uniforms, first responder uniforms, and doctor and nurse uniforms.
These hearts are made from the uniforms of all of our heroes. Then they are sent to the children of these heroes.
I make these hearts in partnership with my friends at InspireUp. We are currently creating and shipping 500 hearts to children of military service members. Find us on Instagram to find out how you can help.
What do I need to make the hearts?
There are very few supplies needed to make these hearts.
Heart Template (scroll down for this template)
Frixion Pens – optional but super helpful!
Military or First Responder Uniform – You can sometimes find these at your local thrift shop. I also suggest simply asking your network, try posting on Facebook to get the word out.
How to make the hearts:
Cut two hearts from the template (linked below) using your pinking shears. You can trace the template onto the back of the uniform using your frixion pen, then press the hearts to remove the pen marks. You also need a strip that measures ~1″ x 6″, also cut with pinking shears.
Fold the 6″ strip in half and clip it between the two hearts. This gives us a place to add a keychain ring or a clip.
Sew around the heart, start about 1″ up from the bottom point of the heart. Be sure to back-stitch to hold the stitch in place. Stop sewing once you have sewn around the heart and you have sewn the folded strip in place (be sure to back stitch over the strip to create a strong seam.) This will leave you with a big hole to stuff the heart.
Leave the needle down on the heart and stuff the heart. Then pin or hold the opening closed and continue sewing to close the heart. Back stitch to create a strong closure.
Trim extra threads and touch up around the edges using you pinking shears.

You can easily create your own heart if you want them to be bigger or smaller. However if you are planning to sew hearts for InspireUp please use the template above so that all our military kids get the same sized heart! Be sure to use the 1″ square to make sure that your template is printed to the correct size. The 1″ square should measure exactly 1″.
