Easy DIY Rainbow Ornament Tutorial and Cut File
Rainbow ornament craft
There are so many ways to make this ornament your own. Let your creativity flow to make yours unique, or if you want to do exactly as I did here is how to do that too…
Supplies:
Rainbow ornament cut file – resize this file up or down depending on how big you want the ornament to be. I made mine fairly large, but you could make them much smaller.
Heat Transfer Vinyl OR Adhesive Vinyl
Embroidery Floss (optional)
Perfect Loft Stuffing (optional)
Making the ornament:
Cut two of the largest semi circles out of felt.
Then cut one of each of the smaller semi circles out of heat transfer vinyl or adhesive vinyl (scroll down for some tips and tricks for using vinyl.)
Place your rainbow pieces onto the felt.
Option 1 (the rainbow colors): Use your sewing machine to sew around most of the ornament. Then stuff with the perfect loft and close the opening.
PRO TIP: Leave the ornament on the sewing machine while stuffing to avoid cutting the thread!
Option 2 (the blue rainbow ornament):
Use embroidery floss to sew the two felt pieces together. Even if you aren’t stuffing the ornament I recommend using two pieces of felt to give the ornament stability.
Add details like french knots, running stitches, or a blanket stitch to make the ornament fun!
Vinyl Tips:
In almost ALL scenarios I would tell you not to mix heat transfer vinyl and adhesive vinyl. If you plan to wash it, in the dishwasher or washing machine, don’t ever mix vinyl types. If it will get a lot of use, like on a pillow cover or on something that is out in the elements, don’t mix vinyl types.
But today is the exception. For this particular ornament I am giving you the ok to mix. Since it won’t be washed, or get a ton of heavy use I went for it and mixed vinyls.
This gives you the option to use up lots of vinyl scraps that you may having lying around, in drawers, on the floor, under the table, in cabinets, on the bookshelf, and probably more places.
BUT there are a few things to keep in mind if you are mixing vinyl types.
Do all of your heat transfer vinyl first, on the bottom. So the largest rainbow pieces should be heat transfer vinyl. The reason for this is that you don’t want to put any heat on your adhesive vinyl. Especially any foil vinyl you might be using.
If you are mixing glitter heat transfer and regular heat transfer do the glitter first, on the bottom layers. The glitter can hold up to a lot more heat than the standard HTV.
For the rainbow color ornament I used all HTV. For the blue rainbow I used two layers of HTV, one layer of glitter adhesive vinyl, and one layer of foil adhesive vinyl.
