How to Create a Paper Pieced Applique

Paper piecing an be so intimidating! I do very little of it because it seems totally overwhelming and crazy. This is a great intro to piecing that is manageable and fairly simple. You will be left with a fun Easter egg appliqué that you can use to adorn a tote, shirt, dress, or whatever!! Here is how to create a paper pieced appliqué.

EZ Print Quilt Block Sheets

Pieced Egg Template

Coordinating Thread (I used Aurifil Light Blue and Aurifil Red)

Scrap Fabric (I used Moda Spring Bunny Fun)

Instructions:

Print the template above onto an EZ Print Quilt Block sheet. I printed three, one scaled at 100%, one at 150%, and one at 200%. Gather scraps that are big enough to cover all the different sections on the egg.

Start with the largest section on the egg. Place a piece of fabric over the section right side up.

Now grab another piece that is large enough to cover the second section and place it face down on the first piece. To make sure that it is big enough I like to hold my finger on the line where I am going to stitch and flip the piece over to make sure it covers the entire section.

Now place a pin well away from the line where you are going to stitch. Now flip the sheet over and stitch along the line where the two sections connect. (This is the main reason I love these quilt sheets because unlike actual paper you can see through it to easily stitch on the lines!) Once you have stitched along the line trim the fabric 1/4″ away from the seam.

Press the seam in place.

Now grab another piece that will cover the third section. Place it face down and test to make sure it is large enough as I mentioned above. Sew in place, trim, and press the seam. Repeat this step for the last section.

Once all the sections are covered flip the piece over again and use a zig zag stitch to go around the entire egg. Set your stitch length the be the same width as the printed line. Then trim as close to the zig zag stitch as possible, be careful not to clip the stitch or it will unravel.
