I love all things modern when it comes to sewing. I adore the geometric shapes and fun and unique ideas. Making modern quilts is so fun and addicting. Which is why I wanted to put together these beautiful modern quilt patterns for you to try and enjoy. I have selected patterns that I find appealing and are mostly modern. I did throw in a couple that are not strictly modern but I just adore.
Beautiful Modern Quilt Patterns
What is modern quilting?
The term modern in quilting refers to the shape and color inspiration. Modern quilting is inspired by mid century modern which refers to the middle of the 20th century. Mid century modern was popular from the middle of the 1930โs to the end of the 1950โs (give or a take a few years.)
This style features lots of geometric heavy design. Circles, half circles, squares, and rectangles are often prominently featured.
Some mid century modern colors are orange, brown, teal, white, and chartreuse to name a few.

If you want to make your quilt fit into the mid century modern genre there are several things to take into consideration.
Consider using very little patterned fabric. A solid color scheme is common for modern quilts. If you are going to use patterns make sure they are geometric in nature, think stripes or polka dots. Avoid anything too busy. Modern is typically clean lines without a lot of extras.
Add shapes like half square triangles, half circles, and curves. Try to add these in larger blocks, again too many small shapes will clutter your quilt and take it away from the mid century modern vibe.
Contemporary Quilt Patterns
Snow Cabin Quilt
I can see where the name for this quilt came from but I see the amazing shapes first and foremost. This quilt has a beautiful visual impact and you could play with the colors and fabric patterns to create so many stunning quilt variations.
Gradation Scrap Quilt
This quilt is a playground for the eyes. I love that can be made from scraps you have lying around. The juxtaposition of the strips next to the mini squares makes it such an interesting and fun quilt.
Homecoming Quilt
I just adore this quilt, it is visually stunning. I also love her color choice, but you can see it in several color schemes on the listing. This would look great in tons of different color layouts.
Go Quilt Pattern
I just love this pattern. It is so pretty! The lines are clean and the shapes and colors are fabulous! I am always drawn to quilts that are worked in rows as opposed to square blocks.
Geometric Quilt Patterns
Triangle Jitters
I want to make this quilt right now! I love how it plays with shapes and how they overlap and intertwine. It gives my mind so much to think about when I look at it! Plus the beautiful modern colors make me smile! Do I spy come cotton + steel on the backing? I think I do!
Nordic Triangles
This quilt is another great one that plays with fun shapes. There are so many ways to mix traditional shapes to make a modern quilt. Color also plays a large part in making a quilt modern versus traditional.
Minimal Triangles Quilt
Modern in every sense. Minimalistic and monotone and trendy and beautiful. I really adore this pattern! This would be a great way to use up those black scraps that you have lying around. Or buy new fabric, because we all need new fabric all the time right?
Just Desserts
Curved piecing is so fun! The mix of curved pieces and squares makes this quilt super interesting. You can play with the patterns and colors to make it more or less modern.
Modern Geometric Quilt
This quilt is beautiful. The half triangles and the strips are so simple but they look fantastic together. This quilt would make a great accent to your modern living area.
Colorful Colorado
As a Colorado girl this quilt gave me all the feels! The colors are super modern and gorgeous. They bring you right out into nature. The geometric shapes are fabulous and I MUST make this quilt!
Easy Modern Quilt Patterns
Graffiti Quilt
There is a new wave of graffiti artists and I for one am totally obsessed. This isnโt modern in the traditional sense with the geometric shapes. It is modern in the idea that you can mix funky prints and create something beautiful and new.
Jumbo Paperclip
Swiss Cross
This black and white Swiss cross pattern is seriously adorable! Plus it is free which is always fun and fantastic am I right??
Sunshine on a Cloudy Day
This quilt might look complicated but if you have a good method for making half square triangles this one should come together quickly. This one could be made to look more traditional based on your fabric choices. Patterned fabric would take this away from the modern category and back towards the traditional realm.
Shape Quilt
This quilt reminds me of school and playing with tangrams. The minimalistic approach to this quilt really appeals to me. I love all the white space and then just a touch of color in the fun shapes.
Handloomed Quilt
This quilt will definitely come together easily. The pattern is very straightforward. Play with the colors to create something incredibly modern!
Modern Animal Quilt Patterns
Elephant Parade Quilt
This quilt plays with shapes in a fun way which makes it non-traditional. How cute are all these animals? I love this one!
Black Birds Quilt
Grey is my favorite color in a modern color scheme. It just makes the other colors look so wonderful. The way the red bird pops on this quilt is so stunning right? These birds look difficult but I bet they come together really quick and are actually fairly simple.
