Fabric Baby Blocks Sewing Tutorial

We have covered a lot of different topics here on the blog but today I want to talk about something that we have never broached! The Y seam! It sounds intimidating and scary but I promise it really isn’t! This isn’t a seam that you use very often but it can be a necessary skill for certain projects like today’s fabric baby blocks sewing tutorial.

Open these and sew a square onto each side to create a row of four squares.

Now place to two far squares together and sew along the edge. This will leave you with the shape pictured below.

Now we are ready to start on the Y seam. Place another square right side down onto one of the squares in the cube. Line it up just as you would if there weren’t the squares on either side. Match the corners and the straight edge. Then sew along the entire edge (using a 1/4″ seam allowance.)

Now turn the piece 90 degrees and line up the second side of the square with the next edge of the cube. Move the seam from the first edge you sewed away so that you can line up the corners of the two squares you are working with.

Sew the seam in place. Repeat this step twice more so that all four edges of the square are sewn.

Fill the block with your favorite filling.

Now for the last step we have some options. I am a lazy sewist and I take the easy road almost every time! SO I use my sewing machine to finish the block. But if you are super concerned about not having that sewn edge showing use a ladder stitch to close the block. Here is what mine looks like with a sewn edge.

Use the whole charm pack and you will have 7 blocks. Aren’t they just precious?
