10+ Items you Never Thought to Use as a Quilt Back

Do you struggle to decide on backing for your quilt? I find myself spending so much time on the front of the quilt that the back often gets overlooked. Here are some unique quilt back options that will have your finished quilt looking amazing!

Decorative Table Cloth

Not only are they pretty but they are one solid piece which is nice when backing a quilt. Plus the pattern is already built in which saves you a ton of work. I don’t know about you but I work so hard on the front I am often tired and ready to be done when I start to think about backing the quilt. This is a quick and easy option and you can find one in almost any pattern if you search on amazon!

Waterproof Tablecloth

A lined tablecloth is perfect for backing a quilt that you plan to use for picnics or outdoors on the lawn. The flannel inside gives it some softness while the outside is waterproof so it can easily be wiped off. I know I don’t take my quilts outside because grass and dirt are everywhere! This is a great solution for an outdoor quilt.

Shower Curtain

I find myself collecting shower curtains because there are so many that are works of art (like the one below!) They would make a great quilt back, go for one the is unlined so that it is soft and easy to work with.

Towels

Towels are another great option for quilt backing. They would be perfect for a beach quilt and you could skip the batting because they are so fluffy!

Sheets

A high quality sheet is a fantastic option for backing your quilt. It is so soft and feels great against the skin for a highly usable everyday quilt. Plus they come in a gazillion patterns so you have plenty of options when it comes to colors and themes.

Vintage Sheets

Have you been combing antique shops and collecting vintage sheets? If you are like me then you have more than a few lying around. I can’t lie I am too scared to cut into them. Use them as a quilt back and you won’t lose any of the charm of the sheets. Quite the opposite actually, you will have a beautifully charming quilt back that everyone will enjoy!

Curtains

When people ask me to make them curtains I always cringe because most people have no concept of how expensive fabric is. The curtains you buy at the store are actually a STEAL for the amount of fabric you get! So not only is this an adorable quilt back option it is budget friendly!

Drop Cloth

Since we are talking about cost effective quilt back options we can’t forget to chat about a drop cloth. This is a massive piece of highly usable fabric! Use it as a quilt back for a unique quilt that won’t break the bank!

Throw Blanket

This might be my favorite option! I love the idea of mixing mediums. Quilting and knitting brought together for one adorable and fun quilt!

Tapestry/Wall Hanging

You may have a few of these hanging around your house or in a closet left over from your college days. Why not add some amazing art to the back of your quilt! So fun!

Tarp

This last option is for the more rugged minded! If you make a quilt for the hunter or messy little one in your life consider adding a tarp as the back. It is durable, waterproof, and easy to wipe down.
