How to Sew a Diaper Clutch and Waterproof Changing Mat
I have always gone against the tide of popular products. We never really used a diaper bag, I just used a large purse to carry all my baby stuff. So I was poking around Etsy and found this adorable oilcloth and I ordered it without really having a project in mind. Then when I was considering the applications for oilcloth I realized it would make a perfect changing mat for a baby, and then I realized it would also make a really cute clutch. That is how this tutorial was born! Here is how to sew a diaper clutch and waterproof changing mat.
This is just one of my 50+ easiest sewing tutorials. Check out the rest HERE.
How to Sew a Diaper Clutch and Waterproof Changing Mat
Supplies:
One Yard Oilcloth (I used this one from Etsy)
Two Yards Fleece (Rainbow)
Coordinating Thread
Instructions:
For the clutch cut one piece from each fabric measuring 16″ x 11.5″. Use an envelope to trace the clutch shape onto one end of each piece.
Cut a piece of pom pom trim that is long enough to go across the edge that you just traced with the envelope. Then pin it in place in between the two layers of fabric.
Sew this edge in place. Then sew around the remainder of the piece, leave a few inches open at the other end to turn the piece out.
Turn the piece out and top-stitch around the entire piece.
To make the changing mat cut one piece from each fabric measuring 30″ x 31″. Pin the fabrics together wrong sides out. Sew around four of the edges again leaving a few inches open to turn the piece out. Trim the corners and then turn the piece out. Again top-stitch around the entire mat.
The last step is to add a Kam snap to close the clutch. To find the spot where you want the snap first fold the mat in half and then in thirds so that it fits nicely in the clutch. Then use the hole poker that comes with the snap to mark the spot and attach the snap.
One optional step (not shown) is to sew a piece of ribbon on either side of the clutch, this will keep it from folding all the way out but it will hold the mat in nice and snug. I didn’t do this but I went back and forth and seriously considered it.
I just think this turned out so cute!! All I had was a swim diaper! Ha!!!

Ok silly question, could I use vinyl (like from a tablecloth) in place of your oil cloth here? Beginner sewer and am interested in making this for my girlfriend’s new baby.
