Quilted Coaster Pattern – Scrap Buster
Do you have a TON of scraps lying around? You probably saved them because you love the fabric so much you can’t stand to throw away even just a tiny piece of it. Making coasters is a great easy sewing project if you want to learn to use up those scraps and create your own fabric coasters in the process. So grab your fabric scraps and let’s get started with this quilted coaster pattern and tutorial.
This is just one of my 50+ easiest sewing tutorials. Check out the rest HERE.
Quilted Coaster Pattern – Scrap Buster
Supplies:
Fabric Scraps
Circle Template – PDF or SVG (Trace a CD to get the same size circle if you don’t want to print or cut with your cutting machine.)
Instructions:
Grab your scraps! Put two together right sides facing and sew a seam. If they aren’t the same size that is ok. You can trim before or after sewing. This is a quick and easy no thought kind of thing. The only rule is that you should attach each piece to a straight edge. So once you have sewn two pieces together square them up so you have a straight edge to attach the next piece to (the next piece should also have a straight edge so trim one side if you don’t have a piece with a straight edge.) The second rule is that you want to press between each new piece. Make sure your seams are lying flat before you add another piece.
Once you have a piece (not necessarily a square but I am going to call them squares moving forward) that is big enough to trace your circle onto stop adding fabric. Because really we are just going to trim the extra off anyway so you will be wasting your time and your scraps. You need two pieces for each coaster so make double the amount of squares to coasters. Trace the circle onto the back of each of the coasters or use your Cricut Maker to cut the circle from the squares. Place the square right side up on the fabric mat if you do use your Maker.
Cut a circle of fusible fleece that is 1/4″ smaller. One piece should suffice but you could use two layers of fleece for a thicker coaster. Press the fleece to the back of the circle.
Place the two circles right sides facing, the fleece will be facing you and visible. Sew around the edge, use the fleece as a guide and sew just to the side of the fleece (don’t sew over the fleece.) Leave an opening large enough to turn the whole piece out.
Turn the circle out. Press the open edge under 1/4″ and press in place. Top-stitch the edge closed.Quilt as desired. And that is it. Repeat to make as many handmade coasters as you like! Make a whole set! These DIY fabric coasters are perfect to give as gifts. Wrap up a set with a bow and give them to a friend or teacher. Try making them in the fabric of a favorite sports team and give them as part of a house warming gift basket.
