How to Sew the Best Oven Mitts
Supplies:
Oven Mitt Template:
PDF – Trace and cut by hand.
SVG – Cut with cutting machine
Fabric
Thermoweb Fusible Fleece or Heat Resistant Batting
Instructions:
Use your cutting machine to cut the template from the main fabric and the lining fabric. Then flip the image and cut another from the main fabric and the lining fabric. If you are cutting these by hand fold the fabric in half and trace the template onto the main fabric then cut (this should cut one that faces right and one that faces left.) Repeat with the lining fabric.
Next cut three layers of fusible fleece to for each set (6 total) in the glove shape.
Press the fusible fleece to the fabric. Press firmly to get through the layers. Flip the piece over and press on the lining side as well. Clip around the edges and then quilt each piece with the method of your choice.
Place the pieces right sides together and sew around the sides, leave the bottom edge un-sewn.
Turn the piece out.
Cut a strip that is 2″ wide and goes around the length of both sides of the unfinished bottom. Fold it in half and clip it in place around the bottom edge.
Sew this in place using 1/4″ seam allowance. Press the seam up towards the gray fabric. This should hide the raw edge and the fleece. Sew this in place, you can use a zig zag stitch to help finish the edge.
Make one or make a set. Either way this oven mitt is sure to be a hit!
