Supplies:
Large Red Pom Pom (I got them at Joanns.)
Headband (elastic or hard)
1 Pipe cleaner (red or white.)
Onesie (I used long sleeve since Halloween is cooler.)
Instructions:
The first step is to cut a lot of tulle!! You will have to measure the person you are making the tutu for to figure out how long you want the tulle to be. It may take a bit of trial and error. What you should remember is that each piece you cut will be folded in half so cut it double the length you want the finished piece to be. For this 18 month old I cut the tulle 9″ long. The bolt is 6″ wide so my pieces measure 6″ x 9″. I wanted a thick tutu so I cut a lot of pieces!!
The next step is to grab the elastic. The waist was 17″ so I cut my elastic to be 15″, it is stretchy and it will stretch out a bit when you put all the tulle on. The only sewing you will do is right now. Using 1/4″ seam allowance attach the two ends to create a circle.
Now use the tulle bolt (or something else like a foam roller or even a pitcher) as an elastic holder.
To make the tutu fold the tulle in half and shove it under the elastic. (P.S. I know you are saying but you said you cut it 9″ and this one looks super long. Yes this one was huge, I had a total brain fart and this one wasn’t the right length!)
Feed both ends through the loop you just created and pull it tight (but not too tight you don’t want the elastic to bend.)
Continue all the way around. Don’t be scared to really shove the knots close together to make the tutu nice and full.
The cupcake onesie is super simple (you could also do this on a sweater if it is super cold in your area!) Use your hot glue gun to attach the bright pom poms around the entire onesie. I put a manila folder in the onesie to keep the glue from going through to the other side. Then roll the folder and put it into the arm holes to get all the way around the arms with the pom poms as well. I love these bright pom poms they are perfect to make sprinkles!
For the headband just use hot glue again. Trim a pipe cleaner to a few inches and hot glue it to the top of a large red pom pom. Then glue it to the headband. My little model wanted nothing to do with the headband. You could add it to an elastic headband or even a hair clip, whatever your little one will tolerate!
That is it! A sweet little tutu and cupcake costume for your little person!!
Isn’t she just the sweetest little lady? If you made it this far I have a secret..she is totally winning at twinning and her little brother will be up next in a few days with an adorable twin costume! Hint he made the cupcake 😉
What costume will you use your tutu for?
