How to make a DIY Bumble Bee Costume
To start we will create the elastic waist band. Measure the waist of your little one. Then subtract 1.5″ and cut that amount of elastic. Then using 1/4″ seam sew the elastic into a circle. Set the elastic aside.
The next step is to cut all the tulle and ribbon. For a 3 year old toddler I used a piece of tulle that was 20″ long. I grabbed a piece of cardboard and cut the width to 10″. Then wrap the tulle around lots and lots and lots of times! I got a spool of tulle (say that out loud it’s fun!) because it is much easier to work with when you are doing these tutus. You could buy yardage but it is a pain to cut and the 6″ spool is the perfect width for a tutu. Take the lazy way, it’s worth it I promise!
Grab your scissors and cut along the bottom edge.
Now you have a whole collection of tulle strips that measure 20″ by 6″.
Cut the ribbon into 6″ strips.
We need to finish the edges of the ribbon and the easiest way is to grab a candle and melt each edge. You could sew each edge under by 1/4″, if you plan to do that cut each strip to 6.5″.
Next attach a ribbon to each end of the tulle. Make sure you use your walking foot. The tulle and ribbon are both slippery and it will slip and slide and be a mess if you don’t use your walking foot! You could also attach the ribbon with fabric glue, this is not as secure but it is a quicker option.
DIY Bumblebee Costume Tips
I know what you are saying. How many? Right? The answer is…lots! It depends on how big you are making the tutu. It also depends on if you do two rows of the ribbon tulle or just one. I did one row of ribbon tulle around the top. Then in between each ribbon tulle I put a plain tulle that I pushed to the bottom to give the tutu some weight and poof. For more detailed instructions about attaching the tulle check out my cupcake tutu tutorial.
Use the spool of tulle to hold the elastic while you attach each piece of ribbon tulle. Once you have gone all the way around and added as much poof as you want you are all set!
This is just the cutest costume! You could cut the feet off the tights and then hem the edge under by 1/4″ to create some cute leggings!
