Cathedral Heart Free Quilt Block Pattern
I always love seeing the Cathedral window quilt blocks and I love making them and I have been playing with hearts in the lead up to Valentine’s Day and I just wasn’t happy with the harsh corners of a HST heart block. I realized I could use the cathedral window technique to create the curves in a heart. Here is what I am calling a cathedral heart free quilt block pattern.
This is just one of my 50+ easiest sewing tutorials. Check out the rest HERE.

Supplies:
Charm Pack OR Four 5″ Squares and Twelve 4″ Squares per block.
Instructions:
For the inside of the heart you will need two 5″ squares and six 4″ squares. For the outside of the heart you will need the same in a contrasting color(s). I am going to refer to the inside of the heart as the gray fabric and the outside as pink fabric for the purposes of this tutorial.
Place a pink 5″ square right side down on the 5″ gray square. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner. Sew using 1/4″ seam allowance on both sides of the line. Use a pair of scissors to cut along the drawn line. Press the seams open and you now have two gray and pink half square triangles. Repeat this step with the second 5″ gray and pink squares. Trim these to a 4″ square.
Now take four of the pink 4″ squares and press them in half diagonally. Pin them onto four gray squares.
Sew along the two raw edges of the pink fabric using a 1/4″ seam allowance.
Now lay your block out as pictured below.
Sew the pieces together to make the block.
Now use the cathedral window method to create the curved hearts. Do this by gently folding the middle of the folded over pieces up into a curve and then sew in place.
Repeat this step on all four of the top squares of the heart.
