What’s the Best Kids Sewing Machine?
Are you looking for the best kids sewing machine for your little one who is interested in taking up the hobby? There are SO many machines out there so I have put together this post to help guide you to the best sewing machine for kids. The answer might not be what you are expecting. Here are the best kids sewing machines.
What’s the Best Kids Sewing Machine?
Kids Sewing Machine Options?
There are tons of machines out there that are marketed at kids. They are pink with cats on them. They come in adorable shapes. But think about the other things that they market to kids. They usually aren’t worth the money am I right?
Sewing machine prices are all over the place. The machines marketed for kids are typically a much cheaper price point. I have even seen some that start at $20.
To get the best idea of what machine to get your child we need to chat about YOUR skill level and how involved you plan to be in the sewing process.
So what is your skill level? We will come back to this in the next section.
Best Kids Sewing Machine?
So what is the best kids sewing machine you ask? I can really only recommend two machines. Almost any machine that you see out there that is marketed for kids is junk. There I said it. This is even more true if it is from a company that is unknown (i.e. not a sewing machine company.)
There is no denying that sewing is a fairly expensive hobby. So it may not shock you when I tell you that if your child wants to sew you are going to have to invest a little bit of money. Not college fund money, more like a weeks worth of grocery money.
So here are my recommendations.
If you plan to be completely involved and sit down with your child for the entirety of their first few projects you will most likely be happy with the Janome Lightning. It is less than $100 and Janome makes a quality sewing machine.
This machine has all the stitches a beginner will need (heck I barely use more than the stitches on this machine.) The foot has a guard for little fingers which will put your mind at ease. Plus it is extremely lightweight which is nice since most likely this machine will be put on the kitchen table and then have to be stored when not in use!
Plus it comes in a bunch of colors! Say your little boy doesn’t want pink on his new sewing machine you can grab yellow, teal, blue, purple, red, and more.
Best Beginner Sewing Machine?
So let’s say you are not the parent who plans to sit and help with every project (no judgement because I would fall firmly into this category!) Or say you don’t have much experience with sewing yourself. In this case I really want you to get the Brother CS6000i. This one is a little pricier.
In fact it is more than double the price of the other machine but just hear me out. I firmly believe that this machine will ensure that your child learns and grows as a seamstress rather than pulling out their hair and throwing the machine in the basement never to be seen again.
Important Features:
So here are the features that I LOVE about this machine for beginners and kids.
- Variable Speed Control – This means that you can set a slow speed and not worry about the pressure of your foot to control your sewing. This frees up your attention to focus on your hands and keeping fingers away from the needle!
- Start – Stop Button – This is another feature that I love for freeing up hands. On machines without this feature you have to hold the thread for the first few stitches which is just another thing to forget that will ultimately lead to frustration (I kick my machine when I forget this all the time!!!)
- Drop in Bobbin – If you know sewing then you know the bobbin can frequently cause frustration. This takes away at least a small part of that potential frustration by letting you drop the bobbin in and not worry about tangling and jamming.
- Presser Foot – The machine won’t sew if the foot is up, it beeps at you. This is by far the best part of this machine. I can’t tell you how many times as a beginner I forgot to put my presser foot down. Which lead to lots and lots of problems with my machine and with the piece I was sewing.
Seriously this is my absolute favorite machine for beginners and kiddos alike. It is lightweight too which makes it great for taking to your sewing class if you plan to take classes to learn to sew projects.
So tell me, which machine will you get for your kid? Do you have another machine that you recommend for kids? Share with me in the comments below.
