Gold Foiled Clutch – Enhancing Your Textiles!
Sometimes I make something with no intention of putting it here on the blog. So I don’t take a lot of step by step pictures. This is one of those times! Once I had finished it though I knew I had to share it with you all because I am totally obsessed with this gold foiled clutch! I love this deco foil and it is great for enhancing your textiles!!
Gold Foiled Clutch – Enhancing Your Textiles!
This is a soft clutch, meaning that I did not use any sort of interfacing to make it stiff. I like the idea of it being soft but you could add interfacing to make it stiff if you wanted! See my Kids First Wallet tutorial for a tutorial on using heavy duty interfacing to give something shape.
Supplies:
Gold Polyester/Stretchy Fabric – 1 piece cut from template
Lining Fabric – 1 piece cut from template
Contrasting Fabric – 1 piece measure 5 by 8.5
Clutch Template (Print this on a standard piece of copy paper and trim the blue portion off. Then cut or fold along the side and place the template on the fold of your fabrics.)
To enhance your textile we will use the liquid adhesive, q-tips, and deco foil. I had this amazing print from Art Gallery Fabrics, the Avant Garde line. Use the q-tips to paint a thin layer of adhesive in whatever pattern you want the foil to be. I decided to do a few squares in gold. Once you have painted on the adhesive you want to let it dry for a few hours. Then come back and cut pieces of foil big enough to cover all of the adhesive (as you can see below.)
Use a heat source to set the foil, you can use an iron or run it through a laminator. Either way you need to protect it with a pressing sheet or a card stock type thickness in the laminator. Then peel off the plastic protecting the foil and you are left with something really fun!!
So I foiled the fabric and then had no idea what to do with it. I got a whim to make a clutch and I didn’t start taking pictures until the very end! So here are the steps for the clutch. Using the template cut out a piece in the gold polyester and a piece in the lining fabric. Put these two pieces together right sides facing each other. Then sew around almost the entire piece leaving a small spot open to turn the piece out. The spot that you leave open should be on the very bottom so that it will get closed up when you attach the front of the clutch.
Once you have turned the piece out we are ready to work with the front of the clutch fabric (the gold foiled fabric.) First fold the top edge down by 1/4″ and sew the seam in place. Then place the fabric right side down on the gold polyester side of the clutch (as pictured below…I know finally right??) Sew it in place, remember this seam should close the seam from the first step.
That is it! The whole clutch is finished. Like I said this is a soft clutch and I didn’t do a clasp or anything. It is very simple and fun!
What a fun little clutch for date night right?
